DEEMED TO SATISFY (DTS) ENERGY REPORTS

If you're building a new home, you need to prove it meets energy efficiency requirements under the National Construction Code.

A Deemed to Satisfy Report is the most straight forward way to do that without modelling.

WHAT IS A DEEMED TO SATISFY REPORT?

A Deemed to Satisfy (DTS) Report confirms that your home complies with NCC by following a set of prescribed construction rules. Instead of modelling how the home performs, DTS focuses on:

  •  Minimum insulation levels
  • Window and glazing requirements
  • Building sealing and ventilation
  • Construction materials

If your construction meets these requirements, it is considered compliant.

WHEN IS A DTS REPORT USED?

A DTS report is typically used when:

  • You’re building a standard home design, or planning alterations or extensions
  • Your plans are relatively straightforward
  • You want a fast, predictable approval pathway
  • You don’t need the flexibility of performance modelling

It’s commonly required before submitting for building approval (Building Permit).

IS DTS THE RIGHT OPTION FOR YOU?

DTS works best when your project is:

  • A project or volume built home
  • A simple custom design
  • Not heavily reliant on large glass areas or unusual layouts

If your design pushes boundaries, a performance assessment may be more suitable but we'll let you know upfront if that's the case.

Common Questions

IS A DTS REPORT MANDATORY?

An energy efficiency report is mandatory. DTS is one way to achieve compliance.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DTS AND NatHERS?

DTS follows fixed rules. NatHERS uses modelling to assess performance.

Which is cheaper?

DTS is often more cost-effective upfront. However, performance modelling can sometimes reduce build costs depending on the design.

Can you work with my builder or designer?

Yes. We regularly coordinate with builders, architects and draftspersons to streamline approval.

Not sure if DTS will work for you?

Send us your plans for a quick review and we'll tell you if DTS is suitable or if a performance pathway will save you time or money.
